After checking out FRIDAY THE 13TH: VENGEANCE, I noticed another film HERE COMES THE NIGHT was released this Friday the 13th as well. So I figured I might as well check it out too.

Filmmaker Tim McCormack offers up an 18 minute short film that is a refreshing back to basics approach to the story of Jason Voorhees. The film looks to take place somewhere in between PARTS 3 & 4, if that is possible. Maybe before PART 3 is more accurate. Still, it takes a lot of what is good in the original quartet of films and simply makes it all feel fresh and interesting.

It’s a basic plot. Three campers go head into Camp Crystal Lake for some fun, drugs, porno magging, and maybe some sexing if they’re lucky. They are supposed to be meeting another group, but instead end up meeting Jason. The film wraps up with a surprise that I didn’t see coming.

HERE COMES THE NIGHT uses the grindhouse effect filter to make everything feel like a rented VHS tape that’s been played way too many times. Technically, the film is rock solid with creative camera angles and staging, a retro-soundtrack, and some truly goppy gore.

This short film moves quickly and managed to make me laugh a few times. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it is able to grasp the heart of what made the original F13 films so much fun. The ending is surprising, though, I think a few extra lines might have made it much clearer. As is, I can see some folks asking WTF? after watching. Still, there is a lot to like about this short and sweet homage to our favorite slasher.
