FACE OF EVIL is another end of the worlder heavily influenced by films like ZOMBIELAND and JACOB’S LADDER. But that doesn’t mean the film is a good one just because it swipes from those modern classics.

When a soldier returns from war overseas, he brings back with him a souvenir bottle of liquor. During a party with his friends, he cracks open the liquor and unintentionally infects his friends with a zombie/demon curse. Soon the soldier reunites with his squad leader and the two tear across the countryside trying to avoid the monsters as the infection spreads. Fearful of government testing gone wrong, the two soldiers are overcome with paranoia that everyone is out to get them.

While I’m all for allegories, they have to be done well to work. The twist is rather obvious, given the broadly horrible acting, ludicrous levels of absurdity the story reaches, and the script that steals from other films in broad daylight. Everything from the sarge’s bad Woody Harrelson impression to the rules he tries to teach the young soldier comes off as simply trying too hard to be something it’s not. This is just one of those films that isn’t even trying to do something different. Maybe somewhere along the way, there was an interesting idea about the contagion of war-time trauma, but it isn’t realized well at all here. Ultimately, it’s the uninspired script and the shoddy execution of it by the actors that fails to get the point across.
