After her best friend and roommate Izzy (Sofia Dobrushin) suddenly dies, Anna (Grace Glowicki) finds herself overcome with depression, unable to work, and retreats from friends and family into her dark, late for rent apartment. Her cat Booger even refuses to help as he bites Anna’s hand just before running out the window into the streets below. As she tries to find Booger by roaming the streets, Anna retreats more and more from her life and seems to be turning into a cat.
BOOGER is a psychological tragedy about the extreme lengths we can go when faced with loss. While there definitely are grossout and body horror moments, this is much more of an emotional journey for Ann, who is having difficulty dealing with the loss of her lifelong friend. Ann goes though many phases of loss through the course of the film, maybe even all of them, but it is all donning the guise of body horror as she begins adopting some of her lost cat’s more disgusting habits.
And yes, this film gets disgusting. There’s hair eating, cat food consumption, and of course, hairballs. Being a bald person who is very conscious of his own hair, BOOGER really got to me more than the most gory blood and guts fests. I was especially freaked out by the hair covered floors that Ann crawls through in her dreams. Ick. Let’s just say, this isn’t a film for those with a sensitive stomach.
BOOGER is finely acted all around. Grace Glowicki does a great job of conveying the loss and desperation and is able to bridge that gap between sanity and the bug-nutz notion that you are slowly becoming a cat. This isn’t exactly a horror movie in the sense of jump scares or anything like that. It’s about the transformation one goes through after losing someone close, BOOGER just goes the grossout way to convey that message.
